Lymphedema Rehabilitation
Lymphedema is swelling of a body part, most commonly in the arms and legs. It is caused by an accumulation of fluid due to the improper flushing of the lymphatic system. This can be triggered by cancer treatments, including surgery and radiation, traumatic injuries or infections. In addition to the discomfort lymphedema can cause to patients, specific tissues affected by lymphedema are at risk for infection.
Symptoms of lymphedema include:
- Persistent swelling
- Hardening of the skin
- Fatigue
- Decreased flexibility in the hand
- Skin discoloration
Lymphedema rehabilitation therapy, offered at UM Shore Regional Health's Comprehensive Rehabilitation location in Cambridge, can reduce these symptoms and the discomfort they cause. Our lymphedema therapist has advanced training in the treatment of lymphedema, including skin and nail care, manual lymph drainage, compression therapy and complete decongestive therapy.
