Diagnostic Imaging and Laboratory - Cancer
University of Maryland Shore Regional Health has some of the most advanced medical imaging equipment available to diagnose and treat cancer. Imaging services include:
- Digital mammography - produces high quality digital images of breast tissue that can be stored and transmitted electronically, as well as enhanced by physicians for more accurate diagnosis
- Image-guided breast biopsy - ultrasound images or a special mammography machine guide the physician to the location of an abnormal growth too small to be felt by hand
- Ultrasound - advanced scanning technology that allows physicians to evaluate blood flow and view images of internal organs as they function
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) - creates incredibly clear and precise images for diagnosis, without the use of radiation
- Digital diagnostic radiography - diagnostic x-rays taken using digital equipment, which allows for immediate viewing of the image and faster exam
- Computerized tomography (CT) - multidetector and 16-Slice CT scanners use x-rays and computer technology to create detailed cross-sectional images of any part of the body, helping to plan radiation treatment
- Nuclear medicine - a non-invasive procedure that places small amounts of radioactive material in the body, allowing physicians to accurately diagnose and treat cancer
- Interventional radiology (IR) - minimally invasive cancer treatment procedures performed with the help of ultrasound and radiography images, often performed on an outpatient basis
- PET/CT - produces detailed images that assist physicians in diagnosing and staging tumors with incredible accuracy, as well as developing more precise treatment plans
