Kerwin Cumberbatch, MD, hematologist oncologist, is now part of the physician network providing cancer care to patients in the five county region served by University of Maryland Shore Regional Health, according to Mahmood Shariff, MD.

Dr. Cumberbatch, who is a member of the Cambridge-based physician practice operated by Dr. Shariff, is based at the Cancer Center at UM Shore Regional Health in Easton as well as at UM Shore Medical Centers at Dorchester and Easton. “In addition to seeing patients in Dr. Mary DeShields’ office at the Cancer Center and at his Cambridge office at 505 Byrn Street, Dr. Cumberbatch brings much-needed hematology services into our hospitals and also provides inpatient cancer care,” says Dr. Shariff. “His expertise makes him a great addition to the cancer care provided by Dr. DeShields and the Cancer Center team.”

Dr. Cumberbatch came to the Mid Shore in July from Montefiore Medical Center, Bronx, New York, where he completed a three-year fellowship (2014-17) in hematology and oncology, serving as chief fellow during the third year. Previously, he had completed a three-year residency (2010-13) at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York, serving as chief resident during 2013-2014.

During his fellowship training, he served as a member of the Quality Improvement (QI) Committee for the Department of Oncology as well as a member of the Fellowship Program Evaluation Committee.

In 2006, Dr. Cumberbatch earned his medical degree from the University of West Indies in St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago and received the Astra Zeneca Award for First Place from the University’s Faculty of Medical Sciences. He is board certified in internal medicine and will take board certification exams in hematology and oncology later this year. His professional memberships included the American College of Physicians (associate member) and the Medical Professionals Association of Trinidad and Tobago.
