According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, nearly five million people are treated for skin cancer each year in the United States. In an effort to promote early detection of skin cancer, the Cancer Center at University of Maryland Shore Regional Health recently held free skin cancer screenings at the Center. Screenings were provided by Michael Del Torto, MD, David Smack, MD and Donald Stranahan, Jr., MD, the program director of the skin screening.
The screenings were open to the public and uninsured and underinsured were encouraged to participate. As a result, 70 participants - from Caroline, Dorchester, Kent, Talbot and Wicomico Counties and Delaware - were screened and referrals for follow-up care and testing were made as needed.
