University of Maryland Memorial Hospital Foundation recently kicked off its 2014 Year End Appeal which will benefit the Comprehensive Breast Center at University of Maryland Shore Regional Health. Funds raised from this year’s appeal will be used to support the purchase of new ultrasound equipment used in detecting breast cancer.
“In 2011, according to the Center for Disease Control, 220,097 women and 2,078 men were diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States,” comments Roberta Lilly, MD, MPH, FACS, medical director of the Comprehensive Breast Center at University of Maryland Shore Regional Health. “Funds raised by the Foundation will help purchase ultrasound equipment, which is used in conjunction with diagnostic mammography to potentially reveal tumors not detected with a mammogram. This technology is critical in the early detection and treatment of breast cancer and can also be used to detect enlarged lymph nodes or guide a needle to perform biopsies.”
“We are most grateful for the generous support of our community members which will enable Dr. Lilly and her team at the Comprehensive Breast Center to continue to provide first-class care to our family members, friends and neighbors when they find themselves in need of breast health services,” remarks F. Graham Lee, vice president for philanthropy, UM Shore Regional Health. “This ultrasound equipment – which costs $160,000 – will further enhance the care provided at our Breast Center and will ultimately help to save lives.”
