Dorchester General Hospital Foundation presents $10,000 for iStat System

The Dorchester General Hospital Foundation recently made a $10,000 donation for the purchase of diagnostic testing equipment for the Emergency Department at UM Shore Medical Center at Dorchester.  Pictured displaying the new iStat® System are Cathy Weber, manager of Emergency Services at the Medical Center; Mike D’Arcangelo, regional director of laboratory services for UM Shore Regional Health; and Ida Jane Baker, Foundation president.

The Dorchester General Hospital Foundation recently purchased equipment, totaling $10,000, for the Emergency Department at University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Dorchester, which enables health care professionals to perform bed-side blood testing.  The iStat® System features technology making it possible to obtain real-time, lab quality diagnostic test results within minutes.

Cathy Weber, RN, BSN, CEN, manager of Emergency Services at UM Shore Medical Center at Dorchester, comments, “The iStat® System, funded by the Dorchester General Hospital Foundation, has accelerated the availability of diagnostic test results for patients being treated in the Emergency Department, enabling our physicians and nursing staff to make quicker and more efficient treatment decisions, and ultimately allowing them to provide our patients with enhanced quality health care services.”

“This technology has the capability to perform multiple diagnostic tests at the point of care, which prior to its use, would have required testing in our laboratory,” remarks Mike D’Arcangelo, regional director of Laboratory Services for University of Maryland Shore Regional Health.  “Our ability to perform such testing at the bedside, the results of which are automatically uploaded to the patient’s electronic medical record, has streamlined the care that our patients are receiving while visiting our Emergency Department.”

Ida Jane Baker, president of the Dorchester General Hospital Foundation, comments, “The Foundation is once again grateful to our local community for its continued support and generosity through donations and bequests, making it possible for us to fund enhancements to programs, services and technology at Shore Medical Center at Dorchester.”
